Media Communications

Media Communications internships run over ten weeks - eleven, including Reading Week - for a total of no fewer than 120 hours. Beginning in late January and through to early April, students will hone their skills in a professional environment for two full days per week. In this time, they will file Internship Reports, generate Company Needs Assessments, and develop Capstone Projects in response to those needs. To successfully complete an internship, the student must also earn a satisfactory (or better) evaluation from the sponsor as well as confirmation that he or she has fulfilled the required hours.

Qualified professional environments include but are not limited to the communications and/or marketing departments of various businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and not-for-profit associations. In these settings, students will utilize many of the skills learned in the Media Communications program, including website development, videography, photography and design.

Because this field placement is structured as a final learning experience, payment to the student is not required. The student’s supervisor will serve as his/her internship sponsor.

The paperwork for the field placement, the bulk of which is the student’s responsibility, consists of the following:

In the third week of February, students must file with their Media Communications faculty advisor an Internship Report in which they describe their internship’s duties and responsibilities, name their sponsors, and provide contact information.

During the second week of March, and as the initial segment of the Capstone Project, the student will file a Communications Needs Assessment & Solution, about which the student has consulted with her/his sponsor and which the sponsor has approved.

Next, in the last week of March, the student will file his/her Research and Planning report, stage two of the Capstone Project. The complete Project - whether a company video, a Power Point Presentation, a promotional piece of marketing, or a re-designed website, etc. - will be completed no later than the third week in April.

During the second week in April, an Internship Evaluation ( form available here ) will be completed by the sponsor and submitted to both the student and the faculty advisor.
